Water water everywhere. We're flooded, and big time. About 4 inches of rain last night, give or take. Downtown is in a furor with People, trying to get somewhere so they can see it.

I've seen as much of it as I want to. I drove out to the river and stood on the dike with the rest of the gawking primates. It's about 4ft from the bottom of the bridge (which is, needless to say, closed.) I then drove out across town the other way, into the commercial part, where I was abruptly stopped and told to Turn Back, and not very nicely. So I went onto the highway, parked and walked in. The "strip," as it were, where all the stores and restaurants and such are, is under 5ft of water. Wal-Mart parking lot is a lake, Pizza Hut was inundated up to the top of its doors. Also, I learned from some friendly Amish men that some enterprising individuals had, earlier in the morning, got their boats out and rowed down to the the various stores and looted them, specifically: the beer distributor and tobacco shoppe. Who wants to take bets on the colour of their necks?

I then drove on down the highway and once I got into the more open area, I saw the real tragedy. On either side of rte. 220 at that spot is farmland. I saw the tops of silos, sometimes the roofs of houses, and that was it. No one was stopped along the road to gawk, no one was taking any notice. They were to excited about seeing the department stores and gas stations underwater. I stopped, thought about taking pictures, and then realised I didn't want to document these people's tragedies. I took the next exit and headed back home.

Along the way, I did take some pictures, which will be up soon and maybe hardlinked into this later. But I took pictures of public places and roadways only. The personal property I left well alone, other than stopping at various places to see if I could help. (Fortunately, I learned that the farmspeople had evacutated last night, as far as anyone knew, and some people had headed out in boats to be sure.) It's a scary, scary thing, to see the land and area you live in, that you take for granted, suddenly be changed so drastically. Nothing is recognisable anymore.

My thoughts are on the people who've lost their homes, and my {wishes|prayers} go out to them. I'll be heading out again in an hour or two to find something I can do to help.

Addendum: picutures here.

LOC's a pain in my eyes compared to mercury blog flow. I've made some improvements, but bottom line is that I need to do some serious overhauling. Or something.

We're talking information design here, not aesthetic.

Dicked with the templates some more. Cleaned up, organized, put some of the sections on category archiving and tweaked the front page so that a lot of things write out here, instead of just log shizzle.

Of course, rather or not Xeno finds these changes to be useful/helpful/decent remains to be seen. LOC is actually looking much closer to what I'd visualized when I was cutting the new aesthetic- not unlike the information design changes made to mercury a couple of weeks ago.

Now I just need to scrub the dipshittiness out of my faq entries and do some cleaning- Past Tense (THE ASS HOLY SHIT) has been defucked, the FAQ has been cleaned up a bit, and everything is now quite a bit cleaner. Woot.

I have no idea what I'm going to do
and I'm so deeply puzzled.
I've done terrible things- I've killed three people.
I don't consider myself a terrible man
more than... than others.

She... had become hysterical and she started... screaming,
I... guess I hit her.
I don't actually recall, it all happened so quickly.
Then I heard her screaming.
But I never understood why... why she did that...
she didn't ever scream before.

I guess you want me to keep on talking.
You make a man feel accepted-
it's all just a great big game to you.
You're all obviously too... lazy and too warped to do anything meaningful with your life;
prey upon the sexual fantasies of others.

I'm sure it comes as no great surprise to you when I say that...
there are... little corners in everyone which were better off left alone.
Sicknesses... weaknesses, which should never be exposed.

But... that's your stubborn trait, isn't it?
I mean, I was never fully aware of mine.
Until you brought them out.

After waking up, getting around, getting Xeno gassed up and caffeinated, giving him a few bux for the road and seeing him off, I promptly deleted the entire iPhoto library on the powerbook. All the full-size source material from the Evidence Log. It was technically an accident- I mistook my home directory on the powerbook for my home directory on the workstation.

Fortunately, Xeno has a backup of ALL of the images. Assmuing HAL doesn't explode.

Xeno and I did Liberty. Hit the town about the same time the Sun hit The Ass Vector (where it's in your eyes, PERIOD.). Encountered a grand total of ten people, counting the shebeast attempting to parrallel park at the high school. Spoke to two of them- Xeno's sister and the clerk at the store. Pismo battery dropped from 90% to DEAD in between the Liberty photo offload and the first offload at Xeno's.

I blame the town.

Nothing has changed, excepting the arrow on Decoursey road pointing off into nothing. Storm damage at my parents house and the noise of my sister's dog, beautiful full-moon rise.

Liberty was, as always, quiet and desolate. One of the street lamps has developed a bit of a tilt.

That's about it, really. There wasn't enough daylight to get the outlying areas I'd intended to target, but that can wait for a better time, better weather, and better equipment.

Which, knowing us, it won't be. We're good about that sort of thing. Guns blazing and all that. I'd prefer Camping of some kind, as it gives us the perfect opportunity to get Lost and gets me the hell out of dodge as well as Xeno the hell out of, well.... whatever he calls it.

"My hair is coming out from under my cap. Red hair of an ogre. A wild beast, the newspaper said. A monster. When they come with my dinner I will put the slop bucket over my head and hide behind the door, and that will give them a fright. If they want the monster so badly they ought to be provided with one. I never do such things however. I only consider them. If I did them, they would be sure I had gone mad again. Gone mad is what they say, and sometimes run mad, as if mad is a direction, like west; as if mad is a different house you could step into, or a seperate country entirely. But when you go mad you don't go to any other place, you stay where you are. And somebody else comes in. "

New irc logs for teh funny, and a new thinger in development soon. (I'll update this to reflect that when it's done.)

Lastly, do read the FAQ. If you're confused or lost, it might help you. Just don't expect it to explain this nonsense because, as was pointed out to me yesterday, nothing can.

1. Added the author icons back into the individual entries.
2. Fixed up all of the page templates for proper titles.
3. Redid the sidebar so it lists updated sections by day of year and time off of a 24 hour clock. I like the 1337 factor.
3. Added a FAQ and made several entries.
4. Redid my own author icon.
5. Actually made an entry for my author page.

I understand it plowed up some coastline real good, but it didn't do a damn thing here except one strong wind gust that sent my trashcans down the street, and pizzled rain for about 5 minutes. It did fuck up the weather patterns a bit though, so that's been interesting.

We haven't had an update since HAL went ka-bork, so I thought it was high time for one.

First, an explanation for the extended absence. Solios has been working on teh comic and I was busy beta-testing SWG. Go visit the various gaming sites for news about SWG launch day and you'll see which of us was more productive.

So, last night I had a dream. An LoC dream if there ever was one. I have the dream written out in stream of consciousness form, now I need to figure out how to write it into a cohesive narrative.

As for HAL's status, he's fine. I went out and got a new 512M stick and slapped it in there. I'd like to get two more of them, but that requires $$ I don't have.

Expect the narrative version of the dream in a week or two.

The Soviets would be doing some big parade thing right now, were they still around. But they're not. So I'm sitting here, with Soul Coughing, Delerium, RSI, IRC, and a nice warmish breeze that smells like spring. At a third past four in the morning.

Once again stuck attempting to capture a moment. Mixed media looks like it's going to be the Only Way. I could bitch about everything I want to do that requires some specific thing I don't have and can't afford. I used to do that a lot, in reference to my skills.

Times change.

Else, why would I be a penciller, inker, writer, video editor, compositor, cinematographer, digital photographer, systems administrator, audio editor, etceteras, etceteras?

Perpetual distraction is the name of the game. Lock down an issue and leave it behind- use distance and time as the resolving factor rather than bothering to explore the underlying nature. Ease of use versus quality results. Lab trials versus field. It's been 7 years since I set that I was going to do a Thing and I have plenty of groundwork and no product. I doubt I have what it takes in the traditional sense, but the ultimate caveate has always been one of source material. I've always been into the weirder shit more than the pedestrian shit, and that's Bad for the most part, considering the extent and the fact that the idea here is to actually make a living being me, telling my story, saying the things I want to say. Fictionally.

Funny. Almost the entire above paragraph was output on the left side of the keyboard. Fingers dancing around in a circle. LOC works into Alias works into Han Dold works into Titanium Dreams becomes Lithium is Aeon. Minus the fact everything I'm outputting goes in a different direction, which is generally unrelated with little common ground.

So it's a bridge, or it's a burn. One or the other. Things seem to be shifting more in a burn direction, with bridge elements. Western Union, if you will. Sitting in between. Hopefully- fucking hopefully - working back towards where things existed around 1997 or so, in which the bulk of creative output existed, unfocused, on one plane.

Whee fun.

Tis the season for taking care of the Old Moldy business- things left unadressed. Explains why gender dysphoria bit me in the ass again, though to be honest it's more of a nibble. Explains LOC focus and design work. Explains the fact that it is five am, and I am listening to Los Angeles. Explains a lot, really. Even the resurgance in video games.

Narrowing the focus, and thinking about Things from an angle I haven't thought along in years. Since West End. Since the 20th century. Possibly earlier. Since Ever.

Great. New view. Closer this time around than last. Xeno's 25 today. I have exactly 50 days to meet my own personal deadline. Starting this shit in my 23rd year, which is running out fast.

From Pittsburgh, good morning.

There's an illustration of Thad and Ornix up on DeviantArt. If you're so inclined, be warned- the site has been accurately described as "slower than a slug on ketamine."

Xenothaulus's lack of comment on this pretty much sums up how I feel about it. Fortunately, the subject matter is circa 1996 or so, when I flavored bigass raver shorts. Since I'm reaching back into the mists of time here, I figure I can write off suck in just about any way I please. Nevermind the fact that I really need to draw more and have never, ever drawn Ornix until now. Ever.

I have more illustration work tentatively planned- things a bit more current, which means, hypothetically, not as much suck. Since Xeno and I are no longer in the same county, I'll be spared the rush of doing a double composite pencil illustration again any time soon, which is probably a Good Thing.

I've made several changes to MT, and plan on making one or two more. The major round of alterations has consisted of breaking down the output section into component entities. Output is now any actual content we develope; material has become development and is anything that pertains to the background of the project. Anything else should be self explanatory.

To counteract either my own lack of MT fu or MT's lack of fu, I've added a "filing status" line to the content browsing- this retains the previous and next while making it completely, mindbogglingly clear what section the bit you're looking at is from. Looks decent.

The site is still in flux, but it's smoothing out and slowing down to a manageable pace. I should hopefully get to the illustrations I'd like to do at some point this week- something neato should come of that.

==

Update: I made a box. It cages title, author and timestamp on the front page, and same information plus the relevant section filing in the output pages. Brings things together nicely, if you ask me. Makes the delineation between content and headers pretty damned obvious.

I've also finished fiddlefucking the sidebar for the time being- it now auto-lists the last two items subbed to the development section of the site, and there's an MT container lying in wait to gleefully announce the first output submission, whenever that happens. O_o

Weird. Even if it's just site tweaking and blog slumming, it feels like LOC is finally starting to move somewhere.

i'm revising the sidebar to make life easier. Basically, we won't need to be reporting updates to the main content here, because you'll be able to see them over there. Neat, huh?

I'm also going to go ahead and restructure the main navigation by adding a few pages and breaking everything down into one main page per section, which seems like a moderately sane way of doing things, if you ask me. This will involve working some filters on the sidebar updater flangus, as I plan on forking things a bit further. There are, basically, five areas to this blogthingy:

1. The log, in which we get to be 1337. Displayed as a wad on the front page and accessable in list form as well.

2. Relative, which is things that aren't LOC but are more LOC than anything else. More or less.

3. Past Tense, which is all of the old shit developed for LOC, which is more or less about as done as it's going to get for the time being, until I dig up the original poem I wrote and "Stranger Things", which is a nonsequel.

4. Material. Which was intended to be actual work output, but has turned into a big development bin. EG, the things in material work to describe LOC in some capacity, but aren't actual Content in the sense of writing, poetry, artwork, etceteras.

Which means I'll be adding:

5. Content (or something of a similar name) which would for all intents and purposes be a happy little box of love for any actual output. If there ever is any. Meaning Actual Fiction.

Woop.

The other idea will be to either axe the prev/next and/or see how feasable it is to add links of section output to the sidebar on a relative case basis.

Post technological fantasy environment: check.
Bug hunting: check.
Slight design tweaks to front page: in progress.
Substantial content of Actual Relevance (relative): still in hiding.

Fantastic.

All together.

I'm thinking of peeling of and extending "output", but there's not quite enough to warrant it yet. Not now. Soon.

Well, the design's been approved. Basically. I still need to make a link button thinger and beat on the CSS so it looks unass. Sometime this week.

And stuff.

This post is really just an excuse for the title. No kidding.

I was hoping you might change your mind.

I certianly change mine enough.

Mercury is in retrograde, I'm looking at blowing out my living arrangements for july, and I have an on-paper, on-file redesign of the LOC blog. Nothing stupendously earth shattering, mind you. Simple. Aesthetically pleasing. Just need to cut it up and whack a template together.

And I have a PSone. It's a cute little bastard.

Seems timely.

No updates for a while, which I'm told has something to do with Hastur taking a vacation. And when he came back, Movable Type was in a snit for a bit (he-he), so that further delayed the update process.

However, we're back, and, um, we're bad. Still. And Stuff.

"Where are your weapons of mass destruction?"
"We don't have any."
"Well, prove it, because we can't find any."
"That's because we don't have any."
"Well why can't we find them then?"
"... You know, we really wish we did, we'd show them to you, right up close."
"Right, well, we're going to have to attack you then."

I'm sorry, but the US administration has the worst fucking excuse for going to war, ever. If Bush and the rest of his warmongering cronies had come out and said right away, "We want to depose Saddam Hussein, he's an evil tyrannt who tortures the citizens under his thumb yada yada yada," I may have felt differently. Probably not, as 1. war is the ugliest thing imaginable and 2. it's not our fucking problem. However, the current excuse of imagined banned weapons completely infuriates me.

Also the fact that the current US administration completely ignores world opinion, and the opinions of its own people, and does what ever it wants makes me embarrassed and ashamed to live here...

I've said this elsewhere, but I felt the need to say it here as well.

--The President; Fall Out

We're getting there.

I still refuse to be categorized, and spit upon those who would categorize themselves. I've been clawing my way up and out for years and I'm not going to stop until I'm clear. My current project is drawing links between LOC and other efforts, which is something I've expected.

When a man dumps his innermost secrets out into the public eye of his own volition, one must wonder- what does he hold in reserve? By being so open, what does he seek to hide from the eyes of others... or even himself?

From Pittsburgh, good night.
