In the process of attempting to kick my ass back into gear re: ATC, I discovered that the backend of the comic is in a horrid state- especially compared to mercury as it stands now. Mercury is making sense on the backend. Thank the GODS. ATC, on the other hand, is a giant icky mess that's going to bite me in the ass sooner or later- later if I leave it alone until it comes time to start the next chapter; sooner if I get proactive with the maintenance and nuke the shit out of the current configuration, scrubbing it clean and starting fresh. I've a better aesthetic framework on the table- what amounts to a skin of mercury, really. It's a simple enough layout, and orders of magnitude more efficient than the present navigational structure. Go me.

The fact that ATC can be reimplimented in three blogs instead of the current ten is tantalizing. Mercury uses four- one for LOC to keep it sane (since it has multiple users); one for mercury itself, which comprises the front of the site and the blog; one for viz (seeing as how viz uses a different template structure- I could get away with chunking viz into mercury, but the plan for viz2k4 puts individual entries to use and as such would get nuked by integration); and the aesthetics controller which contains all of the templates and css for the site. Since this is the same across the board, I've found it's Sane to keep the goodies there, rather than in one of the other blogs- lest I run into the frequent organizational nightmare of keeping it all straight.

That's the thing that governs the frequency of web redesign, actually- organization. I figure out cleaner ways to impliment things, and then can't stand dealing with older implimentations. It's always easier to reimpliment from scratch than it is to attempt to kludge around something that's broken to begin with- especially in a case like this in which what I'm doing is consolidating the data structure into something new and fresh and clean: obviously, I'm putting a higher priority on Sanity Enablers than I am on Production at the moment, but work goes smoother when your workspace isn't eating your face. Ask anyone.

Right about now, 'bout now, 'bout now, 'bout now
12:04 in site

I've had Rockafeller Skank stuck in my head all week. There has been much rejoicing. We care a lot about Dead City Radio. iTunes overload. Right about now, the funk soul brother.

Check it out now, the funk soul brother. The new interface Works. Somehow. Mainly the alterations to dataflow and the functional isolation of components in the sense that mercury and blog are run off of the same backend- where mercury's pages are all top of the directory structure with no subentries as per the blog. The only thing that needs any sort of attention is viz, and I figure it'll get what's coming to it in January, which is as good a time as any to do some sort of restructuring, keeping the current materials framed up as they are or perhaps reimplimenting the whole thing from scratch. I prefer the possibilities of the latter for reasons of organization re: the rest of the site interface.

LOC, functioning according to established habit, has been extensively updated in the wake of the new interface. Something about this process has a habit of kicking xeno and I in the ass.

We care a lot.

In other news....

I had a semi-serious mental episode on Monday, and pumped it all out into artwork. The side affects of this are several new high quality CG pieces and zero work done on ATC, which is starting to look like SHIT in the face of the higher quality work that's been done this week. I blame that one squarely on inking treatments. ATC is low-detail, #3 micron and the stuff I've been doing has been high detail #1 micron. To give you an idea of micron guages, a #1 is approximately the same width as a sharpened number two (HB) pencil, which results in drastically more accurate line work. The #3 is fatter and is good for heavier lines, but integrates poorly against a #1- stroke patching with blunt tips larger than a #1 is, to put it miildly, >_<.

So. Projects are forking, and I'm getting no work done on the two major things I should be haxxz0r1ng at. I've set a personal deadline of getting chapter two scene two of The Dualist done before January, and the other things I'm working on are on no schedule to speak of. Consequently, said projects are the things I'm burning all of my clock cycles on. Go me.

Part of a hate-filled breakfast.

Dead City Radio

Viz is moved over. So now Mercury has been completely migrated and integrated. Tighter CSS presentation, obviously new aesthetic, first real overhaul since the paleozoic. Return to black. Bright colors in dim lighting FRY MY EYEBALLS and I'll be damned if I'm going to broil my sockets with my own material.

Viz needs an implementation overhaul, and a rethink- this has nothing to do with aesthetics and everything to do with the backend. In the meantime, the current setup works, and is less work than the proposed implementation would be- an implementation I'm already using elsewhere, tediously.

So. One MASSIVE restructuring and extension later, mercury has a new face and new material. Easier to navigate as well. Woot.

Und Keine Eier.
14:55 in site

Well. The mercury devblog has been smacked into the current blog, and the whole mess has been configured transparently, for the most part. More shit to work on, but mercury is essentially liveish at the moment. LOC and Viz are still using the old interface- I'll get to that shizzle when I have the time.

Was, not was.

The devblog has been assimilated into the blog blog.

That is all.

The Ticket That Exploded
12:02 in site

As per the previous post, mercury's in a bit of redevelopment. As usual, I get a design together and hate it immediatly, for reasons that can't really be quantified. Part of it is that unlike the Real Web Sites I'm working with, mercury is very rarely, if ever, planned out in any level of detail. It's smacked together, skinned, and called good. End of story. This winds up looking pretty damned slipshod, obviously, and I wind up changing it a few times a year.

The biggest difference between the last build and the current one is that a lot of structural changes will be taking place on the MT end. The project I've been working on at home over the past year is finally in the build phase, and I'm doing it all through MT- it's so extensively thought out and mapped out in terms of information design that there's actually design documentation- something I haven't done since art skool. Fortunately this has revealed some shortcuts for how to properly abuse the CMS- and this is exactly what I'll be implementing with mercury in the coming weeks.

The biggest changes will be to the blog itself- it's going to be completely reimplimented, in a much more cohesive fashion, implementing a lot of the cheats I've learned from other projects. This means a lot of consolidation of unnecessary bullshit, seeing as how I've learned to work around Individual Entry presentation and integration. I'll be moving the devblog back into the main blog tree and removing it as a project. Projects will be moved around as well- basically, instead of multiple redundant blogs, the mercury subdomain will end up having one for viz, one for LOC, one for the backend management, and one for everything else. Go me.

Check it out now, the funk soul brother.
